Newfoundland and Labrador Members Overwhelmingly Ratify New Contract

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[Gander, NL – 30 October, 2023] – The members of IAM Local Lodge 927 employed by Allied Aviation in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, have overwhelmingly voted in favour of ratifying a new collective agreement. The ratification, held on 19 October, 2023, marks a significant milestone in the negotiation process.

The members had been without a contract since 5 August, 2023. After months of effort, the two sides reached a mutually agreeable three-year contract.

The main issues addressed during negotiations included wages, cost-of-living adjustments, and improvements in working conditions. The Negotiations Committee, consisting of highly experienced members, pursued an ambitious agenda to secure favourable terms for the membership.

Key highlights of the newly ratified contract include:

1. Wage Increases: Members will benefit from substantial wage increases in all three years of the agreement.

2. Signing Bonus: All full-time and part-time employees will receive a signing bonus as part of the deal, ensuring that the gains are equitable across the workforce.

3. Total Compensation: Over the life of the three-year agreement, the negotiated terms result in a commendable 9.5% increase in total compensation for the members.

IAM Local Lodge 927’s negotiation team, led by the seasoned members Wayne Whitehorn, Roger Piercy and District 140 General Chairperson, Ed Hepburn showed dedication to their fellow members.

The negotiations were driven by the valuable input of the membership, who actively participated by reviewing the existing agreement and submitting their suggestions for improvements.

The negotiation encountered challenges, notably Allied Aviation management’s announcement of flight reductions at several Newfoundland bases. Despite the uphill battle, the IAM team fought for each gain. The result of their dedication was the unanimous approval of the contract by IAM Local Lodge 927 members, who voted in favour with a 100% ratification.

IAM Local Lodge 927 represents both full-time and part-time ground crew and maintenance workers, and their commitment to achieving a fair and beneficial contract is a testament to the strength of collective bargaining and union solidarity.

“I could not be prouder of our efforts,” said Hepburn. “The bargaining team and I spent countless hours, at and away from the bargaining table, and both Roger and Wayne used their own personal time to work on it. The membership should be proud of their voices being heard in the ratification vote.”
