New CSA Standard For Steel Storage Rack Safety

Most or all workplaces forget about these tall steel pallet storage racks once they have been erected in their facilities. Do not fall into this category as these structures need to be inspected. Some of these racks can be more than two stories high and hold several hundred kilos of material or equipment.

The hazard here is that forklifts and such are moving this material or equipment in and out of the racking several times a day. If racking isn’t inspected for damage, wear or security the risks increase for workers to suffer injury or death.

Canadian Standards Association has released for the first time in Canada two standards that all workplaces with steel racking should immediately adopt. They are A344.1 and A344.2.

Obtain these standards and put them into your workplace inspections.
