Unifor decision serves only to divide the labour movement

Toronto, ON – We have learned that Unifor has elected to disaffiliate from the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). This decision taken by their National Executive Board will also result in their removal from Federations of Labour and Labour Councils across Canada.

“The IAM is extremely alarmed by this decision,” said IAM Canadian General Vice President Stan Pickthall. “This decision only serves to divide the Canadian Labour movement, the impact will be significant.” In an emergency meeting with the CLC last night, it was also reported by Unite-Here that a Toronto Local is currently being actively raided by Unifor representatives.

Within the IAM, we are proud to be firm and strong in our alliance with all affiliated Unions of the CLC, and we will continue to work with the Congress and all of its members across Canada.

“We stand for unity and Solidarity with the Labour movement across the country and across borders,” said Pickthall. “As a strong and democratic international Union, we are proud of the work the IAM has done on behalf of our members in both Canada and the United States.”

CLC President Hassan Yussuff is committed to resolving this issue and reuniting Canada’s Labour movement.
