Sandro (right) was an avid golfer and a big supporter of the Dave
Ritchie Guide Dogs tournament held each year in Toronto. He is seen here with LL 2413 Secretary Treasurer Stan Theofilaktidis.

Sandro Sperduti had a passion for painting and motorcycles. He was a devoted grandfather, a great cook and one tough negotiator. Sandro (Sandi) Sperduti, IAMAW District Lodge 140 General Chairperson, passed away suddenly on Monday November 21, 2011.

Sandy joined the IAMAW in September 1973 as a fueler with Consolidated Aviation. He served twice as the Conductor Sentinel of IAMAW Local Lodge 2413. He was the Shop Committee Chairperson at Consolidated from January 1978 to 1996. Twice he served at Vice President of LL 2413 –January 1978 to December 1980 and again from January 1984 to December 1990. In January 1991, he was elected President of his local and held that position until December 1998. When District Lodge 140 formed in 1998, Sandy was elected General Chairperson, a position he held for 13 years. He was going to retire in January 2012.

“He had a big heart,” recalled former IAMAW Airline Co-coordinator and friend Steve Vodi. “Sandy’s legacy can best be summed up in three words – ‘The Stability Agreement’ – which has provided fuelers in Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax with 13 years of guaranteed work. He agonized over a very tough decision and he made it to keep his members employed. This was a pivotal moment for him as a union representative.”

“Union reps are always tested by fire and only the good ones survive, the rest wilt in the heat,” said Vodi. “The heat never bothered Sandro.”
