New Bombardier Deal focuses on the near future!

Sunday May 14, 2006
For Immediate Release

Montreal, QC – Members of Machinists Local Lodge 712 employed by Bombardier Aerospace have ratified what is being termed as a reality-based collective agreement for the near future. The new agreement replaces the six-year deal signed in March 2005, which became null and void earlier this year when the company decided not to proceed with the production of the new C-Series passenger aircraft.

“Everything is better about this agreement because it’s based on the reality of what’s happening in our industry right now,” said IAMAW Local Lodge 712 President David Chartrand. “Our bargaining team was able to negotiate several modifications to new work schedules, flex time, time banking and job security. Now at least, through the changes to this agreement, our members can comply with family-work constraints.”

Upon ratification of the agreement, workers will receive a $1,500 signing bonus, a 3 per cent wage increase on September 1, 2006 and a 3.25 per cent wage increase in 2007.  Other agreement highlights include:

  • Better work shifts for workers with families
  • Introduction of Flex time
  • Introduction of Time Banking
  • Maintaining double-time on week-days and weekends
  • Evening shift premium increased by 85 cents
  • Overtime after normal work schedule with two day grace period
  • Job security provisions of $1,500 for each year of service if job is contracted out
  • Added job protection provisions for skilled trades
  • Eye glass coverage increased to $250
  • Modification of medical premiums

Pension coverage improvements include raised bridge benefits in each year of the agreement, retaining 50 per cent CPI for three years and the introduction of a pension buy back program. The agreement also contains several letters of intent from the employer including minimum job guarantees for building maintenance trades and no layoffs due to classification mergers.
