Environment safer with the Machinists Union

On January 20, 2004 the 6 employees of the Toronto branch of the Sierra
Legal Defence Fund Society voted in favour of representation by the Machinists Union.

The Sierra Legal Defence Fund Society is a not-for-profit organization that provides advocacy services for the protection of the environment, wildlife and public health.

The main issue for these employees was not money but to have someone to advocate on their behalf, a role in which the IAM will excel. “The bottom line in any field,” said Scott Jackson, IAMAW Ontario Organizer, “is that anyone who works deserves representation. The fact that these new members work to preserve the environment, doesn’t mean they should be left out in the cold. The Machinists are proud they chose us, and we are proud to represent them,” he concluded.

These newest members are a good fit with the Canadian Environmental Network (CEN) in Ottawa, a group well represented by the Machinists Union through Grand Lodge Representative Bill Shipman. The IAMAW has represented CEN since 1998.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) is the largest union in the aerospace and air transport sectors in North America. With a total of 700,000 members, the IAM is present in all sectors of activity. Our members are also present in manufacturing, at the municipal level, the Canadian Mint, the Toronto Transit Commission and many others.
