Determined Anago Workers Choose Machinists |
||
| September 16, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Employees of Anago Resources in London, Ontario finally have the union representation they wanted. On July 28th, 2003 the 75 employees voted in favour of being represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW). Following the vote, the employer placed legal obstacles in their way, obliging them to be present at the Labour Board on two separate occasions. Fortunately, this only made them more determined. Despite the hurdles they had to go through, our members kept at it - and that just made them stronger, said IAM Organizer, Scott Jackson. This grit and determination eventually made Anago Resources see "the writing on the wall." The IAM was soon certified as the trade union of choice. Negotiations will begin shortly. The new members are employed at 2 facilities which provide youth detention and custody services within the City of London. The members sought out the Machinists after learning that we would represent them and help to ensure that they would be treated with respect. They will join members in London-area Local Lodge 756. With a total of 700,000 members, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) is present in all sectors of activity. Our members manufacture aircraft, aircraft engines, electric and industrial turbines, refrigerators, stoves and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, among others. - 30 - SOURCE: Scott Jackson (416) 579-0854 cell |
