Lee-Scott Industries Gets Official With Machinists Union

February 10, 2003

Toronto - After almost a year of trying, members of Lee-Scott Industries can finally say they are members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW).

“Despite the delay, our members kept trying and that just made them stronger,” said IAM Organizer, Scott Jackson.

On May 9, 2002 the 12 employees of Lee-Scott Industries, a small machine and jobbing shop in Markham, Ontario, had enough cards signed in favour of the IAM to request that a vote be held.

On May 16th of that year, when it came time for the vote, the result was 6 to 5 for the union. But it didn't end there. The company wanted supervisors to vote causing the IAM to file charges with the Ontario Labour Relations Board regarding the company's tactics preceding the vote. Finally this week, February 10th, 2003, a revote was held resulting in an 8 to 1 margin in favour of the union.

Said Jackson, “They are a solid group, most of whom are new Canadians. The group came out even stronger than before,” he concluded.

Main issues were, and still are, workload, abuse of discipline and respect on the job. The employees of Lee-Scott Industries will be members of Local lodge 235 and District Lodge 78.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) is the largest union in the aerospace and air transport sectors in North America. With a total of 700,000 members, the IAM is present in all sectors of activity. Our members manufacture aircraft, aircraft engines, electric and industrial turbines, refrigerators, stoves and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, among others.
