Latest Offer from Fleet rejected overwhelmingly by Locals 171 and 939

Fort Erie, ON - IAM Locals 171 and 939 overwhelmingly rejected the latest offer from Fleet Industries. Accepting the offer would have meant an immediate layoff of all employees and a probable recall based on favouritism, not seniority. Those not recalled would not receive the minimum imposed thirteen weeks of benefits.

“There would not be any proper notification of a layoff or "pay-in-lieu-of"; or any severance pay allocated to anyone,” said Julius Antal, President of LL 171. “This would be much less than the minimum requirements allowed under the Employment Standards Act of Ontario.

The offer from Fleet wanted IAM members to ignore certain articles under the Labour Relations Act of Ontario which would take away some of the basic rights that all other provincial employees have.

They haven’t wanted to negotiate,” says Mark MacDonald, President of Local 939. “Negotiating means moving towards a middle ground. They don’t want that. They’re sprinting in the other direction,” said MacDonald.

“This kind of stuff and much more was not included in the offers that they had previously given us. Each offer has been progressively worse", says Antal. “This is not bargaining in good faith. This isn't bargaining at all. The offer was designed to be rejected. One wonders about the real motive behind Fleet's behaviour,” he said

Local 171 rejected the offer by a margin of 235 –1, while Local 939 rejected it 36 – 5.
