Filamat Workers Choose the Machinists Union

TORONTO - An overwhelming majority of the workers at Filamat Composites Inc. in Toronto voted in favour of IAM representation today. In addition to wages and benefits, the main issues were fair treatment and health and safety issues.

The 50 Filamat workers will join Local Lodge 2243, which is part of Toronto District 78. The employees are involved in the fabrication and manufacture of various fibreglass products, including industrial grating, storm drains and piping.

Scott Jackson, Ontario Organizer for the IAM led the organizing drive. “The choice was very clear. We already represent many workers in this sector. The workers knew that we would be able to best represent them. Today they made that choice and this means the Machinists Union can expand its representation in this underrepresented field,” said Jackson.

District 78 Business Representative Plutarco Pacheco also gave a great deal of his time and energy in the campaign to get representation for Filamat workers.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) is the largest union in the aerospace and air transport sectors in North America. With a total of 700,000 members, the IAM is present in all sectors of activity. Our members manufacture aircraft, aircraft engines, electric and industrial turbines, refrigerators, stoves and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, among others.
