| Contact: Frank Larkin, IAMAW 301-967-4520 (office) 202-285-3831 (cell) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE IAM Set to Deliver New Contract for 3,200 at UPS Washington, D.C., October 15, 2002 Four days of contract talks between the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and United Parcel Service (UPS) get underway today in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on behalf of 3,200 workers who repair and maintain Big Browns familiar fleet of delivery trucks and vans. The IAM mechanics and maintenance workers are covered by 21 separate agreements at more than 100 UPS locations nationwide, where local negotiations have already resolved most work-rule issues. The Florida talks will bring local negotiators together with management representatives to reach an agreement on pay, benefits and job security language. This coordinated approach is designed to deliver the economic benefits of a new contract to members nationwide in the most equitable fashion possible, said Boysen Anderson, lead negotiator and coordinator of the IAMs Automotive Department. Key issues identified by members for the national negotiations include placing limits on repair work being contracted out and control of rising health care costs for active and retired members. Weve seen proposals from UPS that would dramatically change the way health care is be delivered to our members, said Steve Sleigh, IAM Director of Strategic Resources. Any change made to control costs must also result in a net improvement in health care and the quality of that care. Additional issues to be resolved this week include improvements to the pension plan, a general wage increase and cost-of-living adjustments. Any agreement reached on these issues will be appended to the local agreements and voted by members in each location. UPS is a highly successful company with a worldwide reputation for quality service, said Anderson. IAM members help maintain that reputation and deserve to be compensated accordingly. There is no limit to what we can accomplish together if we take full advantage of the opportunity before us. Beginning today, a special IAM website at www.goiam.org will provide daily updates on the progress of negotiations between the IAM and UPS. -30- |
