District 181 Gets Organizing Win

For Immediate Release

March 9, 2001

After a long drawn our organizing campaign Organizer Glenn Tomchak has his first win. Ali Arc Industries of Winnipeg and its 16 welders and production staff are under the IAM banner. In a last minute settlement with DBR Ernie McLean and after one full day of a scheduled three days of hearings in front of the Manitoba Labour Board, the Company agreed to an automatic certification for the bargaining unit. Ali Arc is the sole manufacturer of protection bars for trucks and vehicles of all sizes.

Glenn was appointed to the position of Organizer for District 181 on January 2, 2001. "Glenn's successful effort, hard work and natural ability shows that he was right for the organizer's position", said McLean. "I have a feeling this is just the beginning", he went on to say. Tomchak said, "I thought it would be easier to organize people than this case was. I have learned a lot over the campaign and in the 2 1/2 months on the job."

Spirits are high in Manitoba with this small yet significant success. "As we all know you start with small steps and eventually we will be at a run", said Vern Braun, DL President. "I am extremely happy with the successful settlement and professional teamwork shown by our DBR and Organizer. The name of the Fighting Machinists is on the rise in the Keystone Province." "I wonder what the Organizer has in store for us next month?" he went on to say.
