NDP Demands Premier Investigate Threats by OPP
|
||
| March 6, 2001 Immediate Release QUEEN'S PARK -- NDP Justice Critic Peter Kormos has called on the premier to order an investigation into reports that eight OPP cruisers recently surrounded a bus of 25 workers and prevented them, under threat of arrest, from forming an information picket at a Tillsonburg factory. "Sending eight OPP cruisers to threaten peaceful pickets is a police-state response that Ontarians will not tolerate," said Kormos. "The premier needs to stop the jackboots from trampling workers' rights." The Niagara Centre MPP said Labour Minister Chris Stockwell and Solicitor General David Turnbull should launch immediate investigations into the incident. Preventing workers from picketing is a serious breach of Charter rights and cannot be allowed to happen again. "If these reports are true, someone has to call the OPP on the carpet," Kormos said. "These Ajax area workers and their union, the International Association of Machinists, deserve an explanation and an apology." -30- Media inquiries: Sheila White (416) 325-2503 or Gil Hardy (416) 325-7118 www.ontariondp.on.ca Opseu 593 |
