The IAM is very concerned about the introduction of Safety Management Systems (SMS) by Transport Canada into the Canadian Air Regulations (CARS) through the language proposed in Bill C-6.
This self reporting safety process sounds good, but has the potential for the reduction of Aviation Safety Inspectors in the future by Transport Canada, once established. As a matter of fact, that is exactly what will happen, if we don’t express our concerns to the Transportation Minister, before Bill C-6 passes into law. It has passed Second Reading and is currently in Committee.
The Transport Committee has yet to invite the IAM, but have extended an invitation to Air Canada to express their views on Transportation-related issues.
As a result, I have written to the Committee to express our concerns on this issue, as well as requesting that time be set aside for us to share our concerns about the future of the aircraft heavy maintenance industry in Canada.
We are working closely with the New Democratic Party and the Bloc Québecois to ensure that our concerns are addressed. Stay tuned for more information.
