Crowne Plaza Workers Made the Right Choice!

For Immediate Release

Toronto, ON – Workers at the Crowne Plaza Hotel near Pearson International Airport, members of IAMAW Local Lodge 1295, are all smiles over their first collective agreement.

The five-year agreement provides wage increases of 6 per cent including benefits in the first year, and 3 per cent in each of the remaining four years. “This contract removes any doubt in the minds of these workers about the value of joining a union,” said a justifiably proud IAMAW District 78 Directing Business Representative Gary Hynes. “They came to us in December 2007 seeking seniority recognition and protection from having their jobs contracted out. This contract has met those demands.”

Other agreement highlights include :

  • Extra week of vacation for those with 25 years of service
  • Seniority provision language
  • No contracting out language
  • Safety boot allowance of $75.00
  • Co-payment of benefits reduced from $75 to $45 by end of agreement
  • First day coverage on sick days

The 135 members consist of housekeeping, front desk & reservation, switchboard, kitchen, restaurant, maintenance and security personnel. The IAMAW also represents workers employed at the Marriot Courtyard Hotel in Brampton.

IAMAW, among the largest industrial trade unions in North America, represents more than 700,000 active and retired members, and administers more than 5,000 contracts in transportation, woodworking, aerospace, manufacturing and defense related industries.
