A Small Step in the Right Direction

The Ontario NDP has introduced some private members’ bills which would represent a small step forward in protecting workers and communities. They are calling for

• the creation of a Job Protection Commission that would work with workers and employers to keep threatened facilities open, as well as taking an active role in job creation.
• Improvements in severance and lay-off notice requirements in employment standards legislation and a mandatory closure agreement between employers and affected workers
• A multi-partite Labour Market Board to oversee training and adjustment in the province
• A wage earner protection fund to pay unpaid wages, severance and vacation pay if an employer goes bankrupt.
